Conval-Hiltap’s Safe Vent and Drain Valve: the Next Generation of Block and Bleed Devices

When Husky Oil’s Upgrader Hydrogen Plant in Lloydminster, Alberta/Saskatchewan was being built in the late 1980s, the state-of-the-art building required a safer, lighter and more cost-effective venting and draining system for their high-pressure lines in the hydrogen plant. An astute engineer working on the project found that the combination of a Conval Y-pattern globe valve and a Hiltap blind cap fitting could replace the old three-valve system used as a double block and bleed device. Thus the Conval/Hiltap Safe Vent and Drain Valve was developed in a collaborative effort between Conval Inc., HILTAP Fittings Ltd. and Armour Valve Ltd. The resultant innovation was not only smaller, lighter, easier to manufacture and maintain, but also safer and more environmentally friendly.
